Casey Anthony Pregnancy Rumors: Speculation Swirls on Twitter That She Is Pregnant, Dating 'Very Wealthy' Man

Casey Anthony

Casey Anthony pregnancy rumors are swirling again.

It wasn't long after a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin that rumors began swirling on Twitter that Anthony was pregnant.

Anthony, who was acquitted in Florida of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee, in 2011, has been in hiding.

An unnamed source reportedly told The National Enquirer: "She just said that she fell in love with a very wealthy man while she's been in hiding. Casey said he's taking care of her financially and he's so obsessed with her that he'll do anything for her."

A source told the National Enquirer: "Her eyes lit up when she told me that she was expecting, but she wouldn't tell me who the baby's father is."

This isn't the first time pregnancy rumors have come up. For instance, in March, the Daily Mail reported that she was "allegedly telling close friends that she is pregnant with another child and is thrilled at the chance to 'prove' that she is a good mother."

As The Inquisitr?points out, Anthony didn't look pregnant or particularly wealthy when she recently appeared in court for her bankruptcy case.

It's unclear if Anthony is in fact pregnant, but the rumor may have been started by Twitter users who are angry and emotional about Florida's court system.

Italian police raid Jamaican sprinters' hotel

ROME (AP) ? Italian police confiscated unidentified substances Monday in a raid on the hotel where Jamaican sprinters Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson were staying, after each tested positive for banned stimulants.

Rooms of the athletes and physical trainer Christopher Xuereb of Canada were searched and drugs and supplements were seized, Udine police captain Antonio Pisapia told The Associated Press.

Pisapia said it was unclear if the substances were illegal, and that they were being analyzed.

"We are examining the substances now," Pisapia said. "No arrests have been made and nobody has been placed under investigation."

The raid took place at the Fra i Pini hotel in Lignano Sabbiadoro in northeastern Italy.

Powell, a former world-record holder at 100 meters, and Simpson tested positive for the stimulant oxilofrine at the Jamaican championships last month, their agent said Sunday.

The police captain with the specialized NAS unit added that Powell and Simpson were informed of the positive tests Saturday morning.

The raid came in stark contrast to the warm reception that the runners generally receive in Lignano, and the town's mayor, Luca Fanotto, recommended "caution" before drawing conclusions.

"The Jamaican team has chosen the sports facilities of Lignano Sabbiadoro as their training base for years and they never forget to thank the city from podiums all over the world," Fanotto said in a statement.

A local meet is scheduled for Tuesday in Lignano, and the Jamaicans had been scheduled to compete as they do most years. But neither Powell or Simpson was on start lists released Monday.

The news of the positive tests for Powell and Simpson came the same day that American 100-meter record holder Tyson Gay revealed that he also failed a doping test.

Powell was the last man to hold the 100-meter world record before Usain Bolt broke it in 2008. He also helped the Jamaicans to the 400-meter relay gold medal at the 2008 Olympics.

Simpson won Olympic gold in the women's 400 relay in 2004 and silver in 2012, along with an individual silver in the 100 in 2008.

The doping positives come a month after another Jamaican Olympic champion, Veronica Campbell-Brown, tested positive for a banned diuretic.

Family touched twice by murder refuses to give up on South Africa

NBC News

Gaby Burgmer who runs a game lodge called Heia Safari near Johannesburg, South Africa, has lost an ex-husband and father to violent crime. However, she is determined to stay put in her country.

By Ron Allen, Correspondent, NBC News

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa ? Gaby Burgmer calls her home a ?paradise,? even though it is a place where she has endured the grief of two horrific crimes.

Her father, Franz Richter, was murdered here at the Heia Safari game lodge?in 2007 while on his way to pay the local staff. The apparent motive was robbery.

And in April, Burgmer?s ex-husband and business partner, Paul Schulte was shot and killed, apparently ambushed as he returned home.

NBC News

Paul Schulte, Gaby Burgmer's ex-husband and business partner, was murdered in April. No arrests have been made.

It is the story of one South African family?s determination to stay in the country notwithstanding a wave of violent crime.

Burgmer, who is white, pledges to stay put with her family.?

?You see the beauty here? This is Africa,? Burgmer said, waving her outstretched arm, while standing on one of the oldest man-made dams on the continent and gazing out over a huge lake. ?I?m born here,?I?m just as African as anybody else.?

Exotic birds fly by around her, and the sun glistens off the water.

Burgmer is a passionate woman, and extremely proud of Heia Safari.?

It?s about 45 minutes from Johannesburg near a town called Muldersdrift ? a tourist area, full of wedding and event venues near the ?Cradle of Humankind? which is a World Heritage Site and is home to some of the world?s oldest human ancestor fossils.

NBC News

Franz Richter, Gaby Burgmer's father, was murdered in 2007.

Burgmer?s father built the lodge when he came to South Africa in the 1950s from Romania, starting with next to nothing. It is a place where wildebeest, giraffe and springbok roam free, sharing the expansive grounds with the guests.

The zebra drink from the chlorinated swimming pool.

?It makes their eyes sparkle,? Burgemer chuckled. ?Don?t stand behind them,? she warned. ?They kick.?

But she became serious when talking about what has befallen her family.

?It?s a very sad tragedy that has happened, but it has actually made me a lot stronger,? she said, sitting next to her daughter, Bianca Rogers, who has lost her father and grandfather.

?I?m not throwing in the towel, and I will never ever desert,? Burgmer added, her voice heavy with emotion.?

South Africa?s crime problem continues to be one of the country?s biggest challenges.

Perhaps the most worrisome crimes here are confrontational: home invasions, car-jackings and murder.

NBC News

"I'm born here, I'm just as African as anybody else," Gaby Burgmer says.

According to the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria, overall crime is down, but the murder rate is still four times higher than the international average.

There were still almost 16,000 murders in South Africa last year, compared to 12,664 homicide victims recorded by the FBI in the U.S. during 2011 ???a country with more than six times as many people.

?The government must realize it is time to take responsibility, and that they have the power to do something,? Rogers said. ?It is everywhere in our country that we have a crime problem.?

Muldersdrift has formed its own citizens watch group that meets regularly with local police to press for more protection. That follows a series of recent violent crimes that include the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old girl last year.? Residents have complained they feel ?under siege.?

?Hopefully, we can make a difference and improve things for all of us, ? Burgmer said. ?That?s why I?m talking to the world.?

Several people were arrested, tried and convicted in the death of her father. The investigation of her ex-husband?s death continues.? ?Unfortunately, no news or leads yet,? she said recently.?

?My father had a vision to create something that represents Africa,? Burgmer said as she drove down a dirt road leading to the edge of the lake at the lodge. Giraffe, impala and springbok were grazing under a brilliant afternoon sun.

She paused the vehicle and reached for a container in the back seat full of food for the animals. She lifted it outside the car above her head so the giraffes could bend their long necks down and eat from her hand.

?There?s no way I will ever capitulate and go.??

Naughtmuch Directory ? The significance of routine vision exams ...

I have actually always been fascinated by how people make their decision when it pertains to choosing an eye physician. A essential element to take into consideration is the importance of the task of the eye physician? the eye test. Numerous illness can be identified in an eye assessment and this is among the factors that we highly recommend having eye tests annually. Over the years I have had several people thank me for saving their eye or their lives since of what I was able to diagnose throughout the eye test.

Inmates drop out of California prison hunger strike

Published: 3:50PM Saturday July 13, 2013 Source: Reuters

  • Prison wire generic (Source: ONE News)

    Source: ONE News

The number of California prison inmates on hunger strike to protest against conditions in some high security units has fallen sharply, prison officials said a day after they warned prisoners that strikers could face disciplinary action.

The striking inmates, some of whom are also refusing work assignments, are protesting what prisoner advocates describe as inhumane confinement practices, which can include locking inmates in isolated cells for up to 23 hours a day.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed that 7,667 inmates in 24 prisons and one out-of-state unit had missed nine consecutive meals, the benchmark used by the state's prison system for recognizing a hunger strike.

That is well below the 12,421 inmates out of a total prison population of more than 130,000 that officials had confirmed were striking yesterday, in what the Los Angeles Times said marked the largest prison hunger strike in California history.

California prison officials have threatened to impose disciplinary measures on inmates who take part in what the prison system has termed as illegal "mass disruptions."

Officials have not specified what privileges could be taken away from inmates, but on Friday they said visitors would be allowed into state prisons as usual this weekend. They said the prison system was not negotiating with the strikers.

"We're not going to be put into a situation where we're going to be held hostage by convicted felons," said Terry Thornton, spokeswoman for the corrections department. She said the department "has been maintaining open dialogue with inmates and their representatives."

The strike comes at a tense time for the prison system in the most populous U.S. state. It has been ordered by a panel of federal judges to reduce the number of inmates by 10,000 this year to ease crowding.

Security housing units in focus

The Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity group says prisoners want an end to long-term confinement, or isolation, in the so-called Security Housing Units and modifications to the procedure for determining who should be housed there, among other demands.

California holds 4,527 inmates isolated from the general prison population in those units because prison officials found they had committed crimes behind bars or have gang affiliations, according to Thornton.

The corrections department has said the current strike was led by prison gangs and that hunger strikes, work stoppages and other disruptions could potentially affect safety and security behind bars.

Prisoner Hunger Strike Solidarity spokesman Isaac Ontiveros, said he believed more inmates were taking part in the hunger strike than was officially acknowledged but could not provide his own estimate.

"I think the CDCR has an investment in breaking the strike, that they would have an interest in lowballing numbers and blaming the strikers' peaceful protest instead of responding to their demands," Ontiveros said, adding that he would assess numbers after relatives of prisoners visit inmates this weekend.

Carol Strickman, a prisoners' rights attorney who represents some of the hunger strikers in a lawsuit against the state, has said inmates were frustrated that after two widely publicized hunger strikes in 2011, the state had only minimally changed its procedures for solitary confinement.

One 2011 strike over similar issues involved 6,500 inmates at its peak.

Thornton has denied prisoners in the Security Housing Units were totally isolated, saying some had cellmates and that they were allowed yard privileges at least 11 hours a week. Inmates also have access to a law library and cable TV, she said.

travel & leisure: Settling On Efficient Firms Offering Air Charter New ...

Air charter New England offers is probably your best choice of company you ought to have when looking for last minute and exclusive plus direct flight experience. The main significance of utilizing such types of jet service is in avoiding dealing with multiple scheduled flights as happens via public transportation. There is no requirement even to queue up in lines which seem endless.

Another great advantage is that of not needing to bother about any intermediate connections for the air travel. Perhaps one most outstanding aspect is that there is no transfer is necessary too from aircraft to aircraft for one to travel to the objective destination. You get served with a given air-plane to suit all your needs. These would normally have capacity of between one and five-hundred passengers.

It is vital to get an aircraft with sufficient room for baggage or exclusive cargo carrier. Going for air charter companies does require selecting one which is able to deliver the special form of attention which you desire. Baggage and aircraft capacity for passengers are your first areas of concern when choosing express flight travel firms.

Certain types of chartered aircraft are best for use by between 1 to 4 travellers. There are yet others able to carry between 12 and 100 of them. Various kinds of aircraft do as well exhibit different baggage capacities.

One form might transport spare wares but fail to suit the ferrying of vehicles. Thus, you do require to assess what particular distance a given aircraft type is able to travel. Whereas there are some types of chartered services which best suit short flights such as between Los Angeles and San Francisco, others are best for long ones as would be the case for Miami to Moscow travel.

A private charter jet or plane can obtain access to certain airports which scheduled flights are unable to do. An express jet flight may land and even take off for instance on airports numbering well in excess of four thousand. One which is operating on scheduled basis only departs and arrives on below one thousand airports. As such, it could in fact help a lot scheduling to fly via an express air-plane flight in which jets, helicopters and planes cannot.

Charter firms either can charge customers on fixed-rate basis or alternatively at hourly rates. You can for instance be provided with some quote after you avail details about your trip. These are departure together with destination airport, date, traveller number and baggage number too.

Fixed rates could or might not include certain surcharges which encompass state plus federal taxes as well as landing, take-off plus overnight or waiting fees. Certain companies for air transport as well issue breakdown of rates levied on each cabin or seat booked. There are yet others that prefer operating on hourly rates.

Check the specific pricing regime employed by any air charter New England offers to ascertain securing only the choicest form of travel. Management of air charter companies could make huge difference in the form of service experienced by travellers. They cover hiring plus training of pilots and other flight crew, aircraft maintenance and accounting.

Why The Flash is the Only Human Living In the Present

You live in the past. For every possible combination of sensory input you can have, there is some appreciable time between signal and interpretation. Light hits your eye or a sound hits your ear and milliseconds later you actually perceive light or sound. Right now you are looking at this screen as it was a few milliseconds in the past. Reality is on a delay. For you, nothing is now.

Realizing this fact is unsettling. If we can only react to the past, how do we manage to navigate the present? It?s easy to spiral into a treatise on free will while in the fetal position, overthinking our forever past. Unless you are The Flash.

The Flash is the fastest man, biped, anything. He can sprint at the speed of light. When he does, Einstein rests happily in his grave. The Flash tests and proves relativity every time he decides to burn latex. No matter what speed the red blur appears to observers, time effectively stands still for the crimson superhero. But such power poses a problem. When you move that fast, you see bunch light together and change as you move?like how moving towards or away from a police car can make it sound louder or softer. The world would turn blue as you rush towards it. All light would appear to be at a higher frequency?a blue shift. (The same effect is why hyper-speed in Star Wars actually a looks more like a blur than streaking lights and why galaxies moving away from us appear redder than they otherwise should.)

Being the fastest thing alive isn?t very useful if vision blurs into blue obscurity when you travel. Of course, The Flash has a way around this?he lives closer to the present than any human. He can process information and even think at the speed of light.

Taken from Superman #709 and infused with some scienecy goodness, an unknown internaut* created the lovely (if a tad vulgar) bit of science communication below. It puts The Flash?s amazing cognition?the only way to handle moving at light speed?into perspective:

The numeric comparisons are amazing, but this superhuman perception is almost transcendent. When you can process visual information that fast, the world would be crystal clear at any speed. Electrical signals travel and neurons fire in The Flash instantaneously. He could pick out any individual frame from any movie (maybe that single frame of porn from Fight Club). It rectifies the problem of Star Wars-style blurring during light-speed travel that would render any of us blind?like how we would go deaf if we travelled at light speed towards an air horn?and allows the hero to literally think circles around his foes.

By contrast, our processing power is far less extraordinary. It is so underpowered that it made life difficult for early television engineers. Neuroscientist David Eagleman explains that engineers were worried about keeping audio and visual signals perfectly synchronized in the first broadcasts until they realized that they had a grace period of around 100 milliseconds. Any two signals played closer together than this the brain would consider simultaneous and sync-up?a correction for slow perception. Two signals played out of step beyond 100 milliseconds made a broadcast look like a badly dubbed kung-fu movie. To The Flash, that?s what every TV show must look like. He has the latest episode of The Big Bang Theory rendered unwatchable by our regularly paced brains.

With such amazing reflexes, The Flash is the embodiment of the feel-good platitude to ?live in the now.? Like how Einstein demolished the idea that past, present, and future are absolute, if we had The Flash?s cognition it would redefine the human experience. Every TV show, movie, and videogame would look like a series of still frames?the frame rates would have to be astronomical to keep us visually entertained. Your reaction time wouldn?t look totally ridiculous. More consequentially, we could discover so much more than our brains can currently detect. There is a superfluity of science enveloped in the ticking seconds that we cannot perceive. Thinking at The Flash?s speed would be like living in dreamtime?100 attoseconds is to one second as a second is to 300 million years. You could stop to draw all the intricacies of a fluttering hummingbird wing in complete detail?in between beats. The incredible physics hidden in tried and true chemistry experiments would leap out at us like barking dogs. Light speed perception would be a revolution on par with discovering the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond visible light.

Or you could spend your time racing Superman to see who is faster.

Israel's New Man in Washington - by Michael Koplow

There's a new big macher in town. On Tuesday, July 9, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially named Ron Dermer to be his next ambassador to Washington, formally bringing current ambassador Michael Oren's four-year tenure to an end in the fall. In replacing Oren with Dermer (full disclosure: Oren was my professor in graduate school at Harvard University, and we have maintained a good relationship), Netanyahu is replacing one American-turned-Israeli with another, but that is where the similarities end. Dermer will have big shoes to fill, as Oren has done an admirable job as Israel's ambassador to the United States during a time that has been fraught with potential peril for the special relationship between the two countries. Although Dermer will have some advantages that Oren did not, he also has a history of his own that must be overcome.

While Israeli envoys have traditionally reported to the Foreign Ministry, Oren has been in the unique position of bypassing traditional channels and reporting directly to Netanyahu. This is because Oren didn't come from within the ranks of the Foreign Ministry and so wasn't in any way beholden to former Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. But it's also an indication of how far the Foreign Ministry has fallen out of favor under Netanyahu's purview. Netanyahu has sidelined the Foreign Ministry and has run Israeli foreign policy directly out of his office, using personal aides for important diplomatic tasks. While some analysts, such as Aaron David Miller, claim that Oren is outside Netanyahu's inner circle and thus has had a diminished role, there is no doubt that the outgoing ambassador has played a crucial role in serving as a critical communicator between U.S. President Barack Obama and Netanyahu.

One need only look at the results of the past four years to see how well Oren has comported himself in his position. During Obama's and Netanyahu's respective first terms, all manner of analysts were predicting an Israeli strike on Iran and a policy of unfettered settlement building, both of which were going to lead to terrible clashes between Washington and Jerusalem. Indeed, when U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was embarrassed during a trip to Israel by a surprise announcement of new building in East Jerusalem, the immediate fallout was swift. Yet the fears over Iran and exploding settlement growth were never realized, and the actual working relationship between the United States and Israel is as strong as it has ever been in terms of security cooperation and coordination. One has to assume that Oren has played a key role in all this by communicating to the Israeli government the mood in Washington and the dangers inherent in moving unilaterally against Iran or sabotaging the peace process.

One of the Israeli ambassador's primary tasks is making sure that the relationship between Washington and Jerusalem is as smooth as possible, and not only is the institutional relationship humming along, but the personal relationship between Obama and Netanyahu has immeasurably improved over time. During Obama's first term, low points included Netanyahu publicly lecturing the U.S. president while the cameras were rolling during Netanyahu's visit to the White House in May 2011, and Obama later returning the favor by denigrating Netanyahu over an open microphone while talking privately to then French President Nicolas Sarkozy. In contrast, during Obama's trip to Israel this past March, the two men joked with each other, smiled, and seemed far more comfortable than they ever had before. Although the credit for this cannot be laid entirely at Oren's feet, one should not overlook his part in it either after four years of his public insistence that Obama and Netanyahu have a solid working relationship.

The other major task that an Israeli ambassador has is serving as a representative to the American Jewish community, and in this Oren has been peerless. Aside from speaking perfect, American-accented English (as befitting someone who was born and raised in New Jersey and has degrees from Columbia and Princeton universities), Oren is uncommonly eloquent and erudite, with a gift for public speaking. On college campuses and in synagogues of all denominations, Oren is an extremely popular figure, and he has pushed the Israeli government on issues important to American Jews, such as resolving the controversy over the Women of the Wall prayer group seeking to hold female egalitarian prayer services at the Western Wall. He is also a talented communicator in the mass media to the wider American public on subjects concerning Israel's security and interests, and he has done yeoman's work in explaining and defending Israeli government positions. Given Oren's street cred as a popular, respected historian and someone whose publicly stated views before his appointment as ambassador tended to be more dovish than Netanyahu's, Dermer is going to be fighting an uphill battle to match Oren's esteemed reputation and effectiveness as an advocate for his country.

Global recovery, China to pull oil demand in 2014: IEA

July 11, 2013

Global economic recovery and emerging markets led by China will boost growth of oil demand to a record high total next year, the IEA forecast on Thursday.

Next year, consumption by emerging markets will dominate demand overall, a position "they should hold in perpetuity", the International Energy Agency said.

But the overall tone of the IEA monthly report stressed that the oil market is heading into a sea of "many uncertainties", partly because oil production in the United States is "set to grow strongly".

Supply from other countries outside the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), notably Brazil, Kazakhstan and South Sudan, would also rise, the agency forecast.

For this year, because unseasonally cold weather had caused a big increase in demand for heating oil in the northern hemisphere in the second quarter, the agency raised its estimate for global demand by 215,000 barrels per day (bd).

This took the overall estimated annual growth to 930,000 bd, and total consumption to 90.8 million barrels per day (mbd).

The IEA estimates show demand rising by a further 1.2 mbd next year to 92.0 million barrels per day, a new record after record demand also this year.

In London, the price of benchmark West Texas Intermediate oil fell 24 cents from the closing price on Wednesday to $106.28, partly in response to the report but also due to comments on monetary policy from the US Federal Reserve, traders said

Regarding supply, "upheaval in the Middle East and North Africa remains an overarching concern," the IEA warned.

"Emerging markets and developing economies are forecast to lead demand growth in 2014," the IEA said.

The growth of demand from countries outside the 34-member OECD had slowed "from the heady pace of recent years" but would "climb above total OECD demand in the second quarter of 2014," the agency said.

Recently, the speed of expansion had slowed most in China, India and the Middle East, but demand by China would still lead consumption by emerging markets, the agency said.

Against a background of the boom in production of shale oil in North America, the IEA said that the United States would play a role in "an expected steep increase in global refining activity in the third quarter of 2013".

This was part of "tectonic shifts in the mid-stream and down-stream industries."

Unrest in Egypt, Syria, worries oil market

The agency said improving prospects for global economic growth would pull demand, despite increasing efficiency in energy use in advanced countries.

Demand from countries in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development would shrink at a much slower pace than it had since the financial crisis began in 2008.

OECD demand would fall by 0.8 percent this year and 0.4 percent in 2014, on the basis that "OECD economies will on average return to growth in 2014".

The International Monetary Fund was forecasting global economic growth of 3.3 percent this year and 4.0 percent next year, the agency noted.

The IEA said that oil prices had risen recently because of concerns that unrest in Egypt could affect supplies via the Suez Canal and the SUMED pipeline which runs from the Gulf of Suez to the Mediterranean Sea.

"Observers worry that the political confrontation in Egypt, like the Syrian civil war, could drag on and worsen before it gets better, and the instability could theoretically threaten production and transit through the Suez Canal," the IEA said.

Unrest had also disrupted supplies from Libya, Nigeria and Iraq, the IEA noted.

Another factor was temporary disruption to some supply routes within the United States.

In June, production by Saudi Arabia had risen by 100,000 barrels per day to 9.7 mbd, the highest level for seven months, the IEA reported. - AFP, July 11, 2013.

Police: Man who robbed Hardee's at gunpoint had distinctive Apple tattoo

Do you know this man? Police said he robbed the Hardee's in West Manchester Township on Monday, July 8, 2013. (Courtesy of West Manchester Twp. Police)

A gunman with a distinctive leg tattoo committed a takedown-style robbery at the Hardee's in West Manchester Township Monday and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The gunman walked into the 2020 W. Market St. restaurant at 10:32 p.m. and ordered the four employees inside to get on the floor, according to township Detective Sgt. Jeff Snell.

After getting cash from the register, he used the building's back door to leave and was last seen on foot, heading west on West Mason Avenue, an alley behind West Market Street, Snell said.

No one was hurt and the robber didn't fire his gun, according to the detective.

Snell said he's hoping a tipster will recognize the description of the robber, who has a tattoo of the Apple Inc. computer company logo on his right calf.

He's white, about 5-feet-9, 160 to 170 pounds and was wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap with a silver Yankees emblem, police said. He also was wearing a black shirt and black and maroon striped shorts

Anyone with information about the gun-wielding robber's identity is asked to call township police at 792-9514, or call 911.

Research finds more politically invested immigrants tend to be centrist, center-right

In the 2012 presidential election, seven out of 10 Latino immigrants voted for President Obama. As news pundits dissected the defeat of Mitt Romney, they dismissed the Latino vote as unattainable for the Republican Party.

But University of Nebraska-Lincoln political scientist Sergio Wals says that's not necessarily the case. In a new study published in the journal Electoral Studies, Wals found that Mexican immigrants who are more politically invested are center or center-right in their political ideologies.

That means that at least this segment of the Latino electorate is generally more conservative on the political spectrum, he said -- despite what electoral trends in U.S. elections have shown.

"If you look at survey data from Mexico, from 25 years ago -- which is systematic, good empirical evidence -- and you look at the distribution of ideological preferences, it remains fairly stable for the most part. But it has always been heavier on the center, center-right than on the left," he said. "I know there's been a historic trend where anywhere from 60 percent to the current 70-plus percent of the Hispanic vote has gone Democratic, but there are clear exceptions to these national trends."

Wals, an assistant professor of political science, said the parties in power in his home country of Mexico over the last 35 years have implemented right-leaning economic policies. It makes sense, then, that many immigrants come to the United States with more conservative views, he said.

He points to other factors: "For the most part, you have a fairly conservative population (in Mexico) in moral terms, religious terms and even in the recent economic policy history."

Wals' findings are based on a national survey of 399 Mexican immigrants and a survey-embedded experiment of roughly 1,000 Mexican immigrants in Texas and Indiana.

The participants had been in the United States an average of 17 years. The study found that about 70 percent of Mexican immigrants considered themselves in the same ideological place as they were when they were still living in Mexico.

So what might the findings mean for the future of American politics?

"This is enough evidence for the two parties to take a little pause and take these findings seriously, for the Democratic Party not to take the Latino vote for granted and for Republicans not to think it's a lost cause," Wals said.

"If Republicans were to work on outreach strategies and intelligent ways to incorporate this population into their platforms, I definitely think they would fare a lot better than they have in the past."

Both parties also need to make efforts to btter understand the immigrant population, he said.

"'Latinos' is this pan-ethnic label that has been superimposed on a number of groups, (but) there is a wide range of variation and even within national origin, there is a wide variation," Wals said.

In the study, Wals concludes that the political parties need to engage immigrants early on in the immigration process, since the population is "more up-for-grabs than generally depicted in electoral terms."

"It's not that it's a predetermined sort of thing," Wals said. "There is room for adjustment. Those ideologies are an anchor and there's room for adjustment for some of these folks."

Wals said he plans to help explain more about immigrant political ideologies with further research on how ideologies change and how political beliefs translate into choosing a political party, when there is no exact match. He theorizes that this may ultimately explain why center-left immigrants are less likely to be politically involved.

"Overall, you can see people from the leftist party, the Democratic Revolution Party in Mexico, probably having more chances to become Democrats in the U.S.," he said. "At the same time, it's not a direct translation to the point that people on the left from Mexico actually have much more trouble finding themselves being interested in politics in the U.S. because they might not have a good party match."

NBA:Lakers Without Dominant Big Man Face Crossroads With Franchise

I keep hearing the Los Angeles Lakers will be fine now that embattled center Dwight Howard has fled to the Houston Rockets. Howard may or may not get what he wants in the Lone Star State, but in the meantime the Lakers have some gaping holes to fill for the immediate future. The future looms with first ballot Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant facing retirement within three years. Are the Lakers going to be fine without Howard?

Howard needed work to get to the point of leading teams to NBA championships. He wasn't there yet and the jury is still out on whether he'll ever get there. But now that he's off getting fit for new cowboy boots, Los Angeles needs to get busy.

Chris Kaman will fill the role for a year. He's a seven-footer, and as everyone knows you can't teach height. He'll take up a lot of room in the paint and can get aggressive at times. Maybe the Lakers need that in the middle. What they won't have in Kaman is 20 points a night. He's not a consistent offensive threat, and he got a one-year deal. Is that the end of discussion here?

For the first time in many, many years, the Lakers will not have a dominant center. They've always managed to sign the premier guy in the middle over the years, but not this time. How could one say no to a historic franchise with the reputation of the Lakers? Playing center in Los Angeles used to be a privilege that was earned. These days we have a guy turning it down! Unthinkable.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar will probably be remembered as the greatest center in L.A. Shaquille O'Neal wasn't too shabby either. For the old timers, Wilt Chamberlain was unstoppable. For the NBA purists, center George Mikan got the ball rolling before the Lakers left Minneapolis. Heck, Mikan won five championships for the purple and gold back in the day.

It seems almost inconceivable Howard didn't want to become a part of this group. They've all won championships. They've all gone to the Hall of Fame. They've all done it the right way and more importantly did it with flair and success.

Los Angeles and it's revamped front office needs to figure it out. I remember when players would do anything possible to play for the Lakers. It was an attraction. It was a goal. The Lakers can't afford to let the shine disappear. Jim Buss and company must once again make the team a destination. As I said, they've got work to do.

I don't want to hear this discussion of sliding Paul Gasol over to the center spot at times and he'll be okay. Really? Gasol can play center, but can he play the position effectively? Does he have the intensity to bump and grind with the Roy Hibberts and Tyson Chandlers of the league? More importantly, can he regain the form of an NBA All-Star power forward? What happened to Pau? Can someone please tell me? I miss the 2009-10 Pau.

Not having a quality center in L.A. is like having cereal without milk in the morning. It's tough to swallow.

Watching the team put up billboards to convince someone to stay with the Lakers was an interesting move. It seemed weird the team had to go to such great lengths to convince someone to stay in Southern California. It was also strange seeing someone unsure if he wanted to be the starting center for a franchise with 16 championships, How can anyone walk away from this job?

Playing center for the Lakers is a dream job, isn't it? I know there are big shoes to fill, but certainly Howard had the potential. He had the size. He had a Hall of Famer in Kobe. Isn't this one of the jobs kids are hoping to get one day if they make it to the NBA? Did Howard turn down the chance of a lifetime?

Every Laker championship team had the big guy in the middle. Chamberlain's massive wing span and far-reaching sweeping flip shot over the rim are legendary and worth finding on YouTube if you haven't seen it. He was just too tall, and defenders were always mismatched. Wilt's arms were very long and intimidating and everyone knew it was just a matter of time before he and Jerry West won the title and they did.

Kareem played 20 years in the NBA. He won five rings while playing with the Lakers. His sky hook was history in the making. No one had ever done it or seen it. It was almost impossible to stop. Your only defense against the sky hook was hoping he'd miss the shot. That's how effective it was and he kept the legacy going at the position with the Lakers.

Shaq was the best player at his position in the league during the early and middle part of his career. He had a great run commanding the paint while wearing purple and gold. He was so big and powerful they invented "hack-a-shaq" to stop him. The conventional wisdom: foul him and send him to the free-throw line and hope he misses because he's too big to stop any other way.

Shaq knew the history of the position with L.A. and he took the ball and ran with it. The plan was for Howard to be the next great big man for the Lakers, but it was not to be. So what's next for a team that traditionally had the best big man in the game? Is it rebuilding time or can we scrape some cash together and sign another scorer?

The Lakers have a lot of money tied up in two players, Kobe's $30 million and Gasol's $19 million. There isn't a lot of flexibility there this season. Next season? It's a different story, and they have a ton of money to spend on someone. And I won't waste my time on the LeBron speculation in this space.

Buss, sister Jeanne, and general manager Mitch Kupchak should be in the office as I type this. I hope they have a plan. Is the 2013-14 season irrelevant? is the team looking ahead to 2014-15 when they'll have the cash to go after a superstar or two?

Who is Kobe gonna pass the torch to in 2-3 years? The great Lakers have always passed the torch to someone, right?? There was always someone waiting in the wings to grab the baton and lead the purple and gold to more championships. Where is that person and who is he?

I never had doubts about the late Dr. Jerry Buss when the Lakers were facing lean years. Dr. Buss always had a way of swinging the big deal. He was a master at his craft and the banners hanging at Staple's Center are proof of that.

The Los Angeles Lakers are at a crossroad. Which way will they go?

Ofilispeaks: Stop Writing Names Of Noisemakers | Bella Naija

noisemakersI got beaten quite a lot in primary school. It was not for punching a girl, or for stealing a class mate?s lunch, or for sleeping during lectures (although I was guilty of that a lot). I got beat simply because I talked, because I expressed myself, and because the person writing names of noise makers was not my friend.

It?s ironic that we spend so much time telling our children to keep quiet, if we knew any better we would tell them to speak up more often, to let their voices be heard. But we stifle their words and their imagination; we see quiet students as the intelligent ones. But you know who changes the world when they grow up? The noise makers ? the ones we tell to keep quiet, the ones we beat till their hands go numb ? they are the ones who change the world. But we beat their voices out of them in school and then years down the line we ask why our youths are not speaking up!

And where did we get this notion that education was created to be about quiet learning?? Because, it does not fit us?because Nigerians are loud ? we speak loudly, and argue loudly, and express ourselves loudly. That?s how we communicate; that?s how we evolved. But instead of embracing our natural cultural history, we instead jump into the British way of doing things. And it should not be that way. The Nigerian educational system, if not all educational systems, should not be about how silent you can be, but rather how loud and expressive you can be. I mean you don?t learn by staring at your books and teachers in silence; you learn by engaging with teachers and students. That is the way the real world is. Now I am not saying that learning in silence is always bad ? I?m saying that noise making should be encouraged in school, and not shut down or punished. Apart from stifling learning and the development of intelligence, it kills any form of engagement ? so the average Nigerian grows up as an individual seeking to be the best he can be, instead of being part of a collaborative group of people seeking to be the best they can be and offering the best to their community or country!

I mean we spend 12 years telling primary and secondary school students to keep quiet, and then we thrust them into the world and tell them to make a change and speak up against social injustice! ?And then we are shocked that they can?t!?!

We have to break the myth that a well-behaved child with good grades is the ideal leader! I mean, look at people like Gani Fawehnmi, Fela Kuti or Pat Utomi ? one would be hard pressed to believe that they were amongst the quiet ones in class ? in fact chances are they were top noisemakers in school! But look at what they have done for Nigeria by simply speaking up and making noise ??let?s stop writing down the names of noise makers!

'Dexter' is 'perfect'?! 4 big moments this week

TV

People need to stop hatin' on serial killers! That's the takeaway from "Dexter" this week, anyway. The way Dr. Vogel fawned over Dexter Morgan, you'd think he broke into people's houses at night to deliver toys (olive-green henleys are the new Kris Kringle costume) instead of murdering folks.

But from the point of view of the neuropsychiatrist (whose perspective may be a bit clouded after keeping company with psychopaths all her life), we should be giving Dexter, not Santa Claus, milk and cookies for "making the world a better place."

Here are the four biggest moments from "Every Silver Lining" -- which also marked star Michael C. Hall's directorial debut!

1. Home movies: Dr. V videotaped all her sessions with Harry Morgan, proof for Dexter that she'd been shaping his destiny since he was a boy. And unlike his horrified and conflicted father, Vogel is downright proud of the man -- or "alpha wolf" --- he became. Dexter and his cohorts in crime are "an indispensable demographic" helping "the human race become civilized," she argued. And who are we to argue? We've been rooting for the vigilante for more than seven years now! Still, we might have to draw the line at calling him "perfect."

Image: Dexter, Dr. Vogel

Randy Tepper / Showtime

As far as Dr. Vogel is concerned, Dexter is exactly what this world needs.

2. Brain teaser: But Vogel has an ulterior motive behind her sick sweet talk: She needs Dexter's help because Miami's latest serial killer, dubbed the Brain Surgeon, is leaving trophies on her doorstep. And not just bits of his victims' brains -- also a DVD proving that the murdered suspect, Sussman, was coerced into killing the last victim.

Image: Miami Metro detectives

Randy Tepper / Showtime

The "Brain Surgeon" isn't giving the detectives a fully intact victim.

3. Brother in arms: Unlike Vogel, Deb doesn't want Dexter's help -- but she sure needs it. She found Briggs' stolen jewels in a storage unit (Miamians sure do like their storage facilities!), but El Sapo followed her and absconded with them -- and her gun -- after an epic fight. Worse, he's later found murdered in his car, which contains traces of her blood and her firearm in the glove compartment. To save his sister, Dex replaced her gun in the evidence room.

Image: Deb

Randy Tepper / Showtime

Deb hit yet a new low, but this time, Dex was able to help -- a little.

4. Sergeant Quinn: Speaking of stealing evidence, Quinn is finally getting some story lines that don't revolve around hangovers and dirty policing. Unfortunately, one of them is the old "sergeant's exam" plot. (See: "The Wire," "Homicide," etc.) Unfortunately, he and Batista (his future brother-in-law?) are still steps behind both Dexter and P.I. Deb, so it's debatable whether he deserves to be promoted from Deputy Dawg.

Image: Quinn

Randy Tepper / Showtime

Surprise! Quinn's story line this year doesn't involve being a dirty cop -- but he's still not the smartest one.

Killer sound bites:

  • "I don't take requests." -- Dexter when Vogel asks for his help
  • "Miami makes more corpses than sunburns." -- Dexter
  • "You're exactly what you need to be, Dexter: You're perfect." -- Vogel, whose infatuation with Dex is almost creepier than his sister's

What do you think Dr. Vogel's up to? Will she blackmail Dexter if he doesn't go along with his plans?
