UEFA still has unsold tickets for Euro 2012 final

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:33 a.m. ET June 5, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -UEFA says it still has tickets available for several European Championship matches in Ukraine, including the final.

UEFA says there are "a limited number of corporate hospitality packages" remaining for the July 1 final in Kiev.

Of 1.4 million tickets available for the 31 matches, fewer than 10,000 are unsold, including some seats for the England-France game in Donetsk next Monday.

UEFA says the total number of unsold tickets represents "less than 0.8 percent of the overall capacity" at the tournament.

Tickets priced from ?30 ($37.3) are still being sold through UEFA's website and outlets in Ukraine.

All matches being played in co-host Poland have sold out.

Poland kicks off Euro 2012 against Greece on Friday in Warsaw.

How a switch-based power source will save you money

Hooking up home appliances like televisions and lamps to plugs contrilled by switches isn't just a convenient novelty: it's a simple way to see big savings on your power bill.?

One of the things I really liked about our house when we first moved in is how each room had multiple switches that controlled particular wall outlets. All you had to do was flip a switch in that room to cut electricity to the outlet.

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

At first, this was just a convenient novelty. We hooked up a few devices that we might want to turn on when we entered a room, like a digital picture frame.

After a while, though, I began to realize that this little feature can save a lot of money over time. Here are three examples.

The entertainment center Hook up your television, your DVD player, your stereo, and any other devices on your entertainment center to a single surge protector, then plug that surge protector into an outlet controlled by a switch. Whenever you leave the room, flip that switch.

What this does is it not only eliminates the power use from any devices you forgot to turn off, it also cuts out the phantom energy drain from devices that stay on standby mode. Several devices left on standby mode can easily devour 100 watts of energy, meaning that you?re down a dime during your overnight hours or during the workday. A simple flipping of the switch keeps this from happening.

The lighting In a dimly lit room, you can hook lamps up to those power outlets to provide whatever lighting arrangement you?d like. If that outlet is hooked up to a switch, you just have to flip a switch when you enter or leave the room to manage the lights. There?s no need to reach for lamp switches, and several lamps can be controlled by a single switch.

The small kitchen appliances Many of these eat electricity over time if they sit in standby mode. There?s no reason to have a food processor, a blender, a microwave, or other devices just sitting there sucking down electricity when they?re not in use. Put them all on a switch, then when you?re about to cook, flip that switch. Do your food preparation, then flip the switch back off. It?s much easier than chasing cables around.

How much does this really save you? Per use, it?s a small amount. As I noted above, an entertainment center might suck down 100 watts of power when everything is on standby. In other words, you?re devouring a kWh every ten hours, and the electric company charges anywhere from $0.10 to $0.26 per kWh.

So, let?s say you?re in your room with an entertainment center an average of four hours a day. That leaves twenty hours where your devices would be in standby mode. That?s $0.20 to $0.52 per day saved by having things on a switch.

Over the course of a month, that?s $6 to $15.60 saved by simply having things hooked up to a switch. Over a year? $72 to $187.20.

If you have any outlets in your home hooked up to switches, I recommend taking advantage of them. If you?re building a new home, plan to have some outlets hooked up to switches. If you?re an electrician, this is a straightforward home improvement project. Is it something worth hiring an electrician to do? Probably not, unless you?ve got some pro bono work coming your way.

It?s just a simple way to save some money on your energy bill. Saving money becomes as easy as flipping a switch.

Trademark Registration ? Legal Terms ? Law | Raw Business Law

bcom-sy-07o-corporate-law2.jpg

As trademark registration is a legal process, there are several legal terms, either formal or informal, with which the applicant should be familiar.

1. Badge of origin: the function of a trademark. It indicates the identity of aperson or business as the source of goods or services.

2. Bare License: Occasionally a trademark owner allows another person orOrganization, through a license, to use the trademark, but fails to maintain effective supervision and quality control of the licensee?s products or services. The original owner may or may not suffer some decrease in legal rights regarding the trademark, depending on circumstances. This situation is termed ?naked licensing? in the United States.

3. Distinctiveness: also termed ?Acquired Distinctiveness.? This status is attainedthrough the use of the mark, normally for a considerable period of time. Evidence of use, such as sales receipts, sales figures and reports, and advertising or marketing budgets, are useful evidence.

4. Exclusions: Many countries do not permit certain symbols or terms to undergo the Trademark Registration process. National flags, the insignia of royal families and the Olympic Games rings are all excluded.

5. Infringement: the unauthorized use of a trademark. Note that to prevent infringement, the trademark must be registered, or the trademark must have been used for a long enough time so that it has acquired distinctiveness.

6. Passing Off: Regarding an unregistered trademark, this is a situation in whichone person?s or business?s goods or services are manufactured or presented resulting in confusion with another person?s or business?s goods or services. Typically, one unregistered trademark is very similar to another registered or unregistered trademark. To successfully benefit from passing off, a person must be able to prove that the trademark belongs to them. More, they must have established some sort of reputation through use of the mark. Finally, the individual must be able to show he or she has somehow been harmed by another?s use of the mark. Proving a passing off action can be difficult and expensive. Registering the trademark is an easy way to protect against another?s unauthorized use of your trademark.

7. Prior Rights: certain legal rights acquired through use of an unregistered trademark for a long enough time that it has attained local uniqueness.

8. Trademark: a specific sign used by an individual or business to distinguish the products or services provided by that individual or business from those of other people or organizations. A trademark may be traditional, such as a word, phrase, logo, symbol, design, some sort of image or a combination of these. There are also non-traditional trademarks, such as colours, sounds, and even smells. Trademarks are considered as property.

9. Trademark Classes: classification of goods and services into specific classes.Numbers 1 to 34 include goods/products, while Numbers 35 to 45 include services. This classification arose out of the International (Nice) Classification of goods and services. The purpose was twofold: to decide exactly which goods and services are able to be registered under trademarks and two, to attempt to unify various national classification systems.

For clarification of any of these terms, or guidance in the process of Trademark Registration, interested parties should contact the United Kingdom Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO).

I Took Out a Four-Year Auto Loan ? Healthy Aging Medical Center

When I was buying a brand new family car from my local car showroom, I did not have enough money to buy it without finance. Fortunately, I managed to locate an auto loan comparison website on the internet and this website allowed me to compare nearly all of the car finance options in the marketplace. After careful consideration, I decided to take out a four-year loan and I only had to put down a five hundred dollar deposit. I did originally want to take out a six-year loan, but by spreading the cost over such a long period of time, I would have had to pay a lot more interest. The four-year loan that I took out does not have the lowest interest rate in the auto loan marketplace, but I do not think I would have been approved for the loans that have lower interest rates because my credit score is less than perfect. I am happy with the loan I have taken out though, as there were no loan arrangement fees to pay and it does not have any early repayment penalties. Therefore, if I suddenly come into some money, I will be able to pay off my auto loan early without any fees.

Google tells Chinese when they're being censored

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ? Google has started telling users in China when web searches contain keywords that could be tracked by the country's keen-eyed censors, one of the company's top officials announced.

?Starting today we?ll notify users in mainland China when they enter a keyword that may cause connection issues,? Alan Eustace, a Senior Vice President for Google, wrote on the company's?Inside Search blog on Thursday. ??By prompting people to revise their queries, we hope to reduce these disruptions and improve our user experience from mainland China.?

As the video on Eustace's blog shows (see below), triggering connectivity issues on Google.com.hk?can be as easy as searching for one of the country?s greatest natural landmarks: The Yangtze River.

Presumably in this case, "Jiang"?the Chinese character for river, is a sensitive term because it is also the last name of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin. The 85-year-old, who is thought to still be politically connected, is the focus of constant?erroneous?rumors and reports about his death.

Consequently, if you are looking for "Chang Jiang,"?the popular name of the Yangtze River here in China, you could run afoul of sensors looking to block rumors of the former leader's death and have your connection to Google temporarily terminated.

Online coup rumors spark China crackdown on social media websites

The video on Eustace's blog shows how it took about 90 seconds after each sensitive search for the connection to be re-established on several Internet browsers and devices.

This graphic shows the message that will appear when users try to search for these restricted words:

Google

Google?s move will ostensibly allow users on the mainland to see when their searches are being censored and understand why the service is disrupted. Other Google products, such as Google Mail and Documents, often fail to load and frequently require refreshing or an enabled virtual private network (VPN) to access freely.

However, since Google?s high profile ?pullout? of its search engine from China in 2010, Google?s share of the search market here in China has shrunk from 30 percent in 2009 to 16.6 percent in 2012, according to Beijing-based research firm Analysys International.

Much of that share has been ceded to its Chinese rival, Baidu, which now dominates the arena with 78.5 percent of the search market. Even Google Maps, which was the most popular online mapping service on the mainland for some time,?recently lost the top spot ?to a competitor.

One tweet, 10,000 followers: Dissident artist Ai Weiwei slips, briefly, through China censor

Those dwindling mainland users who have undoubtedly already encountered search restrictions and disconnection issues before, but continue to rely on Google, will probably not benefit too much from the company's new measures. After all, many of the users who suffered through 90-second connection resets in the past have already turned to other ways to bypass the restrictions.

What this move will do, though, is help Google regain the moral high ground internationally by reclaiming ?Don?t be Evil,? it's informal corporate motto. Google has long fought for a more open Internet around the world, and even created ?Transparency Report,? which looks closely at net freedom issues.

Read more news from Behind the Wall

However, privacy issues in the United States and a European Union warning to Google to review its recently revamped privacy policies have haunted the Silicon Valley giant, forcing its data mining practices to the forefront.

Google?s new service may help some mainland Chinese users better understand how Beijing restricts its netizens from accessing certain material, but for the message to be really effective, Google first needs to get people to use its service again.?
