W. Basketball. Women's Basketball Kicks Off 2012 at New Mexico

Jan. 1, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of Houston women's basketball team begins the New Year with a final tune-up prior to Conference USA play, facing New Mexico at 8 p.m. CST on Monday night at "The Pit."

The Cougars return to action for only their second contest in the past 23 days dating back to Houston's 83-60 victory over Houston Baptist on Dec. 10.

Senior guard Roxana Button has led the Cougars through the opening 11 contests with 18.8 points per game, which ranks third in C-USA and 30th nationally. Button has scored in double figures in all 11 games while posting 20 or more points in six contests and is only 140 points shy of joining Houston's 1,000-point club for her career.

ABOUT NEW MEXICO
The Lobos are coming off of a come-from-behind one-point victory over New Mexico State on Friday night to improve to 5-8 overall this season.

New Mexico has averaged only 54.4 points per game this season, but excel on the defensive end, limiting opponents to just 54.8 points per contest. The long and athletic squad has held the opposition to 35 percent shooting from the field and 32 percent from beyond the arc while swatting 4.9 shots per game.

Junior guard Caroline Durbin leads the Lobos with 15.2 points per game and is shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range. Senior forward Porche Torrance is also scoring in double figures with 10.3 points to go with 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per contest.

SERIES HISTORY
Houston and New Mexico will meet for the fifth time in the series history on Monday, as both teams have claimed two wins.

The Cougars and Lobos haven't met since the first round of the 2001 WNIT, as New Mexico came away with a 72-49 victory over the Cougars, who were without star guard Chandi Jones. Houston is 0-2 when playing at "The Pit", while claiming its two wins at home on Nov. 29, 1999, and at a neutral site during the 1981-82 season.

UP NEXT
After making the trip to Albuquerque to face the Lobos, the Cougars open Conference USA play at home against Marshall on Jan. 5, where they will look to extend their regular-season winning streak in league play to 20 games. Houston then takes to the road for league games against Southern Miss (Jan. 8) and SMU (Jan. 12).

NWOKEDI JOINS TEAM FOR 2012
The injury-plagued Cougars will receive a shot in the arm for the start of the New Year, as junior forward Jennifer Nwokedi will become eligible for competition for the New Mexico contest on Jan. 2.

Nwokedi, a 6-1 native of Houston, spent two seasons at Tulane, where she shot 52 percent in limited action as a sophomore. Nwokedi starred at Houston's St. Agnes Academy where she earned All-State honors as a junior and senior.

Nwokedi brings much needed athleticism and experience to a young unit at the post position and will look to become a major factor on the glass for the Cougars.
