With Andy Roddick's announcement that he will retire following the U.S. Open, it is a chilling reminder that he was the last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title way back in 2003. To give you a sense of how long it has been, Andre Agassi won the Australian Open earlier that year.
Agassi is also the last American male to win the French Open, with the victory coming in 1999. And in 2000, Pete Sampras was the last to win Wimbledon.
If no American male wins this year's U.S. Open, it will be the ninth straight year without a winner from the United States. That is the longest drought in the Open Era (1968-present). And this came immediately after a stretch of 15 straight years with at least one winner...
